History of the Government of Catalonia and the Palau

The Palau de la Generalitat, the headquarters of the Presidency and the Government of Catalonia, is used to host the most important political and institutional events in the country. The ‘Diputació del General de Catalunya’, popularly known as the Generalitat, established its headquarters in this building in 1400.

Historically, the Diputació del General de Catalunya, aka the Generalitat, originated in the former Corts Catalanes (Catalan Courts), a parliamentary representative assembly that shared power with the monarch and was one of the first bodies of this kind in Europe. The first president was Berenguer de Cruïlles, appointed to the Courts of Cervera in 1359.
